Race report by Patrick Fankhauser
Last weekend, the 3rd round of Swiss nationals was held in sunny Herblingen where track conditions changed with every heat increasing grip to the maximum, so it was a bit of work to find a constant setup.
However, my car and engine worked perfectly the whole weekend, making only a small amount of changes.
In the first two qualification heats I got beat by under a second, chasing Maurice Lüscher, while I could speed up in heat 3 and set a new fastest lap. Only my teammate Kevin Lehnherr did a faster one in last quali and reached a 3rd place overall in front of another XRAY pilot Traugott Schär.
With a win in superpole I secured 2nd spot for the A final.
The raw and technical track ate up the tires very fast so I decided to do a tire change after 15 minutes while others ran their hard compound tires down to the rims.
At the beginning I grabbed the lead and pushed it hard to have enough space for the tire change. After that, I found myself back on 3rd spot chasing Maurice and Michael Schäfer – my teammate.
With fresh kicks I could push it to the limit and speeded up to the leader, but couldn’t pass before the finish line, standing one second behind.
While championship leader Traugott Schär fought with a damaged car from a crash at start, he managed to achieve the 4th place, Michael Schäfer finished 3rd behind me. Victory goes to Maurice Lüscher.
Thanks to T&M Models for an excellent support and also big thanks to my pit crew Ariane and Kevin who made a perfect job and to my girlfriend Sue for the pictures.
At 1/8 category XRAY freshman Luca Martinelli placed 3rd.
